‘Human rights on a human level’ event gives new perspectives on issues society faces

FARGO — To make a difference in your community, you may need to look at things with a different perspective. That was the idea behind an event celebrating human rights, Thursday evening Jan. 24, at North Dakota State University.

Dozens gathered in the Century Theater at the school’s Memorial Union for the first annual “Seven,” which gave people an opportunity to do just that. It was put on by the Human Family and members of the university.

The number seven is symbolic in many religions, and in the history of philosophy, organizers said.

The event featured films, performances, and engaging presentations about social issues affecting society today, such as context, preparation, motivation, obstacles, outreach, focus and philosophy.

Seven guest speakers, including professors and psychologists, addressed those seven categories through the lens of human rights and social justice.

Organizers hope this encourages others to take what they’ve learned and positively impact those in their lives.

“What we’re providing are examples of how they can do that,” said Sean Coffman, executive director of the Human Family. “It’s kind of a how-to to make the world a better place.”
